How did The Battle of Dunkirk impact the war and the people back home?
Effects on the War
Lots of British equipment was left behind on the beaches. In France, 880 field guns, around 500 anti-aircraft guns, 11,000 machine guns, about 850 anti-tanks guns, roughly 700 tanks and 65,000 vehicles. Therefore, lots of our equipment and money went to waste.
It gave soldiers some positive thoughts as thousands of people had just been evacuated! This could have helped them to carry on fighting.
Because the Germans weren't that aggressive towards the soldiers at Dunkirk, it made a smaller chance of them coming to invade Britain as they couldn't even attack Britain on a smaller scale!
Also, the Battle of Dunkirk showed that Germans could make bad decisions and this could mean more bad decisions in the future.
Effects on the People Back Home
The evacuation of 338,000 people also made people back home very positive because it showed that Hitler wasn't as powerful as people thought and the evacuation gave a big boost to morale in Britain.
Families were waiting for their loved ones to return. It could have caused a bit of worry but positive vibes took over.
Analysis
The Battle of Dunkirk didn't effect the war too much, it mainly affected the morale of Britain and I think it gave people a determination that they could possibly win the war if they kept fighting. If the morale hadn't had grown so much, maybe Operation Dynamo would have been seen as less of a success.
