The Battle of Dunkirk VS D-Day!
After The Battle of Dunkirk in 1940, another major battle occurred in the history of WW2 D-Day...
On the 6th of June, 1944 over 150,000 soldiers from British, American, French and Canadian forces attacked the beaches of Normandy. Germany had now taken over France and was trying to invade America and Europe. But, Britain and America weren't having it and Operation Overload began. The Allies were very prepared with troops and equipment at the ready. Over 1000 bombers a day were hitting German targets, to try and weaken them before the invasion. However, the Germans knew an attack was coming the only thing was... where were they going to attack?
The way the allies tricked the Germans was very clever. They used dummies to draw fire and to confuse people. Paratroopers jumped out of planes at night and prepared behind enemy lines. Lots of bombs were dropped on the Germans and warships would bomb the beaches from the sea. Members of the French Resistance cut telephone lines off and destroyed railways underground. Then, over 6,000 ships approached Normandy beaches with troops, weapons and tanks. The American troops landed at Omaha and Utan beaches. Many Americans lost lives here but America claimed the beaches in the end.
By June 17th over 500,000 troops arrived further inland in France and the allies began pushing Germans out of France.
It was a success!
So, D-Day was also a highly successful battle in that the allies had an aim, and they achieved it, like Dunkirk! But, which battle was more successful?
D-Day or Dunkirk?!
My Thoughts
I think that the most successful battle that took place in WW2 was the D-Day landings. I think this because even though in Dunkirk, over 300,000 men were evacuated, we weren't the winners. We did save our troops and boost the morale in Britain but, we didn't beat the attackers, they took over Dunkirk and we didn't do anything about it.. we couldn't. Whereas, on D-Day the allies had a major plan, and they achieved that with clever, sneaky tricks. In the end, we pushed the Germans away out of Normandy and won France some land back. I think that these two battles are very, very different. Dunkirk being a major rescue operation and D-Day being a big invade on German land. Although they were different, they both gave positivity to Britain and they both played a part in winning us World War Two!
